Katy Perry has been putting out single after single from her album Teenage Dream for the past two years, but she’s finally putting it to rest. She has often referred to the different songs from Teenage Dream as chapters, so it’s only fitting that the video for her latest single, Wide Awake, is teased as a literal chapter from a book.
Chapter 1- California Gurls
California Gurls was the song that set the tone for the album and the video that made Katy literally appetizing to watch on screen as she ran through the fictional land of “Candyfornia” (a play on California) setting free her army of candy girls from a myriad of different candies.
Chapter 2- Teenage Dream
Then came the title track, Teenage Dream. It was the song that made people fall in love all over again, and relive their hapless romantic teenage years. The video pairs teenage hormones with just the right amount of skin to get the point across that the two lovers are really each others’ Teenage Dream.
Chapter 3- Firework
Firework came along at the right time it seems. While Firework was receiving massive amounts of airplay, bullying became a focal point in the media with anti-bullying campaigns taking off in almost every major city in the country. The video for Firework was actually filmed in Budapest and all of the actors had to submit why they were “fireworks.” The stories behind some of these kids are phenomenal. She dedicated the video to the It Gets Better Project.
Chapter 4- E.T.
The fourth single, E.T., was a little different, but a great way to incorporate love and extraterrestrial beings, two topics you wouldn’t necessarily connect. Not to mention, this was the first big collaboration for Katy and Kanye West.
Chatper 5- Last Friday Night (T.G.I.F.)
Last Friday Night (T.G.I.F.) was the party anthem of the album. The full video for the song was 8 minutes long and featured the original Friday girl herself, Rebecca Black, as well as other A-list actors and public figures such as Kevin McHale, Darren Criss, Kenny G., and up and coming male model Richie Nuzzolese.
Chapter 6- The One That Got Away
It was only a matter of time before a ballad was released, and The One That Got Away was by far one of Katy’s biggest songs. She’s released the song with a total of three versions: the original studio version, a collaborative effort with B.o.B. and an acoustic version.
Chapter 7- Part Of Me
Now for the not so fun part of Katy’s very public life. After her divorce from Russel Brand, Katy premiered Part Of Me on the Grammy Awards and immediately had the media swarming. Is this song really about another famous ex, Gym Class Heroes‘ Travie McCoy, or is it about Brand and the divorce that preceded the release of Part Of Me?
Chapter 8- Wide Awake
And now the final chapter of Teenage Dream…Wide Awake. Katy has been through so much since the release of California Gurls, that a song about being aware and being hit with a dose of reality is fitting to close the book on Teenage Dream.
Epilogue- Katy Perry: Part Of Me In 3-D
Katy is taking her fans on a journey from the beginning of her California Dreams Tour where they can experience everything she went through from sold out shows, to meeting fans, to even her personal life.
