B.G. has been hit with serious time behind bars. The Lil Wayne associate and Cash Money artist who helped popularize the term “bling” was sentenced to 14 years for gun possession and witness tampering.

Facing 40 years, a humbled B.G. (born Christopher Dorsey) showed up in court in a wheelchair Wednesday (July 18). According to Nola, Assistant U.S. Attorney Maurice Landrieu pushed for the longer sentence, adding that the self-proclaimed Baby Gangsta made millions off of his native New Orleans’ “cycle of violence.”

However, U.S. District Judge Ginger Berrigan, who also critized B.G.’s street-rap content as music that “may have contributed to the murders of young people,” refused to use the material as a validation for handing out a longer prison sentence.

Previously, B.G. had pleaded guilty in February 2010 to being in possession of a firearm as a felon during a random 2009 traffic stop in eastern New Orleans. He was later indicted on new charges of witness tampering after authorities discovered that the rapper coerced one of the arrested passengers, Demounde Pollard, to sign a false confession claiming that the weapons belonged to him.

Pollard later reached a plea agreement with prosecutors and was given a sentence of 30 months in prison. Jerod Fedison, another B.G. cohort, received a sentence for 20 years. Lawyers representing B.G. made it known that their client was willing to confess, but said he was not cooperating or “snitching.”

As one of the members of Cash Money’s Hot Boyz, B.G. became one of the star headliners of the New Orleans label along with Lil Wayne, Juvenile and Mannie Fresh. His biggest commercial success came in 1999 with the release of his platinum album Chopper City In The Ghetto, which spawned the single “Bling Bling” that helped to popularize the term “bling.” –Keith Murphy, CBS Local
