Frontman Rob Thomas and lead guitarist Kyle Cook of Matchbox Twenty visited Fresh 102.7/New York recently and discussed how they racked up nearly $30,000 in wine while recording their new album North.

“I think it could have been more,” Rob admitted.

Meanwhile, bandmate Kyle disagreed.

“I don’t know I take issue with that number,” he said. “There was a lot of wine though. We got some for free too by the way. It’s the power of Twitter.”

Coppola Winery (of Francis Ford fame) sent the band four cases of wine while they were producing the album after the band Tweeted how much they enjoyed that particular brand.

“It was like, ‘We love this wine!’ And then Coppola Winery actually Tweeted us back and said, ‘Yeah, we’ll send you four cases of wine,’” Kyle said.

The winery sent the band wine to the cabin they were recording their album in and then Matchbox Twenty got creative.

“Then we started thinking, ‘We like Lexus’ too. We like a lot of different things.’ But that didn’t work out so well,” Kyle continued.

“Kyle was like, ‘I like Blake Lively, Twitterverse?’” Rob joked, alluding to Kyle’s hopes that the actress would appear out of thin air.

So can Kyle out-drink Rob?

“We could probably toe to toe it,” he said.

Rob agreed.

“We hold our own.”

Performing in an intimate setting at City Winery brought back memories of the band’s 17-year journey in the music industry and their steady climb of turning their passion into a career.

“After that first record, we started off playing places like this to half empty rooms this size. Throughout that record we started playing bigger clubs and theaters and then we ended up in arenas all over the world,” Rob said.

With sold-out venues and anxious fans, the band began recording their second album realizing that they were on a steadfast path to stardom and that it “doesn’t get any better than this.”

Five albums and thousands of dollars of wine later, Matchbox Twenty are at it once again with the release of their new album, North.
